Not Your Typical Running Retreat

The journey will begin at San Cristóbal de las Casas, the cultural and historical epicenter of the mystical and remote region of Los Altos de Chiapas (Central Highlands). Dubbed “The most magical of mexican towns” by a former president, San Cristobal features beautiful colonial architecture and old cobblestone streets that have been preserved since the times of Spanish rule. The subtle scent of the region’s coffee in the air and the bright colors from the crafts and textiles from the local Tzotzil population, make this a very special and unique town.

During your time in San Cristobal, you will explore the surrounding area, where you will visit an extinct volcano, the enigmatic town of San Juan Chamula, the textile community of Zinacantán and the region’s world renowned coffee region, where you will be able to hang out with the farmers as we enjoy one of Mexico’s most sought after cups of coffee.

Later during the trip, you will spend two nights at Lagos de Montebello, where you will run on a series of trails with stunning views of Guatemala and the region’s lake system. The run will finish at the Tenam Puente Archeological site, a series of ruins that date back to the Mayan empire.

Your guides, local medicine men and spiritual teachers will make sure that this life changing experience transcends running, allowing you to dive deeply into the region's history and set out on a journey of awareness and self discovery.

Cultural Experience

For decades, the state of Chiapas has caused worldwide fascination due to the preservation of its indigenous cultures, its coffee, natural landscapes and untouched archeological sites. San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán are two notable examples of the region’s indigenous heritage. Here, indigenous cultures have managed to survive, keeping many of their traditions untouched and their unique lifestyles alive.

While Zinacantán is renowned for its millenary textile traditions, the church in San Juan Chamula is considered by many the most mystical church on earth, where worshipers engage in rituals that involve a mix of Catholic beliefs with indigenous traditions such as copal burning, spiritual cleanses, animal sacrifice and Tzotzil chanting.

During your runs, you will explore these two towns and visit the houses and studios of its top craftsmen. You will also visit your friends Antolina and Sebastiana who will prepare a local meal for us in one of the mountain communities surrounding San Juan Chamula.

Due to its location and vitamin rich soils, Chiapas is Mexico’s top coffee producer, cultivating over 50% of the countries coffee and some of the very best and highest-grown in the continent. During the retreat you will be able to visit an authentic Finca de Café operated by friends at Cafeólogo in collaboration with local farmers. Here you will witness the production process, connect with the farmers during lunch at the finca and enjoy some of the very best coffee in the world.

You will also visit Lagunas de Montebello, a National Park in the southernmost part of Mexico, that is made up of 59 multi-colored lakes spread over 15,840 acres of pines and tropical forest. Here you will visit the border with Guatemala, and enjoy breathtaking views and local cuisine before finishing the trip on top of an ancient pyramid at the Tenam Puente Archeological Site.

Route Description

The start of the journey will take you to the mystical and somewhat remote mountainous region of Los Altos (Central Highlands). San Cristóbal de las Casas will serve as your base during the firs three days of the retreat.

The first day of the retreat, you will run 15 kilometers, from San Cristobal to San Juan Chamula, where you will visit the Church before heading to the finish line in the textile town of Zinacantan. Here, you will visit the local craftspeople and have a community gathering with traditional food at the house of and indigenous family.

The following day, you will run 18 kilometers from the hotel to the top of the Tzontehuitz, an extinct volcano that is next to Tenejapa where you will join the local coffee producers for a meal and coffee tasting.

On the third day, you will do an easy eight kilometers through the old colonial streets of San Cristóbal, before leaving on a road trip to Tziscao, a community located next to the border with Guatemala, in the Montebello Lakes National Park. Here, you will run 16 kilometers through a series of trails in a misty forest that is filled with seemingly endless lakes.

Your final day will consist of a 10 kilometer run which will end in an experience of ancient Mayan times: on top of a centuries old pyramid in the Tenam Puente Archeological Site.
