The Funky Monkey Lodge is set back from the road in Santa Teresa, providing a more peaceful and quiet setting, yet it is only a 4-minute walk to the beach and top 3 famous surf areas. The lodge offers a variety of 5-star services and amenities, including a restaurant offering a daily fresh and healthy menu prepared by their chef, the only sushi restaurant in Santa Teresa, a bar and lounge area with pool tables and hammocks, a pool situated on top of a natural rock hill in the middle of the lodges private jungle, a beautiful open air yoga, and aerial silk studio in the middle of the jungle, and plenty of opportunities to view nature around you including birds, animals (lots of monkeys), insects, and the flora and fauna of the jungle.

The lodge offers 6 different types of accommodations for every need and budget, including private bungalows, suite, small apartment, large apartment, large bungalow, and budget rooms. All accommodations include Wi-Fi, sheets, towels, daily room cleaning, toiletries, etc. Other amenities can be made available upon request.

Private bungalows

All private bungalows have a double bed and a bunk bed, a private bathroom, which is partially open to the sky for hot water showers under the sun or stars, small kitchenette, fridge, safe box, and wood furnishings. The bungalows are built with an excellent ventilation system, and each has a ceiling fan, and Wi-Fi. All beds have orthopedic mattresses. Each private bungalow counts with a private veranda with hammock where guests can enjoy spectacular Pacific sunsets, or just listen to the monkeys and birds.

Suite

The suite offers a spacious room with double bed and an additional sofa convertible into king bed, 2 fans, safe box, mini fridge, large private balcony with hammocks, wide-screen TV, Wi-Fi, and private bath with open sky shower.

Small apartment

The small apartment is a cozy room with a queen bed and a bunk bed, has an ocean view and air condition, private bath, safe box, mini fridge, and Wi-Fi. Great for couples up to 4 people.

Large apartment

Facing the swimming pool, the large apartment has an ocean view, air condition, private bath, safe box, and Wi-Fi. It is a large room with a queen bed, 3 individual beds, and 2 extra pull-out beds, which would fit for 4 to 7 people. No separate rooms.

Large bungalow

It has two floors with 8 individual beds-4 downstairs and 4 upstairs, no separate rooms, bathroom, and shower which is partially open to the sky, small kitchenette, Wi-Fi, fridge, and spacious veranda with hammock.

Budget room

Simple room with Wi-Fi, ceiling fan, and shared bathroom next door. The budget room can be rented out as private or individually rented beds as shared accommodation. Please inquire on shared accommodation prices.

As an avid outdoor enthusiast, you can often find this nature lover hiking or biking on a trail, paddling, surfing, or practicing yoga on the water, camping in the mountains or desert, or exploring her yoga practice outdoors! Mary Susan has taught Yoga for all-ages, family, adaptive, teens, tweens, kids, and tots since early 2011, and is a certified 1000+HR RYT Yoga & Meditation teacher, a WPA/Paddle Into Fitness Certified Stan Up Paddleboarding (SUP) and SUP Yoga teacher, certified Kids Yoga teacher, certified Adaptive Yoga teacher.

Santa Teresa is a small beach town in Costa Rica nestled into the coastal mountains on the southern most tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, touching the Cabo Blanco Nature Preserve in Puntarenas Province. Due to its panoramic vistas, sparkling white sand beaches, tropical jungles and adventurous opportunities, this Pacific Ocean beach city has become one of the top tourist destinations in the world.

Santa Teresa has come to be one of the top surfing destinations in Costa Rica, and the world. Santa Teresa is known for its consistent year round surfing, pristine white sand beaches (often rated among the most beautiful in the world), it’s large variety of small boutique beachfront hotels, and world class cuisine. Although it has grown tremendously in the past decade, the town itself is still actually quite small and intimate.

People flock to Santa Teresa for a good dose of sultry sun, sun drenched beaches, flourishing wildlife and raging waves of the Pacific Ocean. Surfers can ride the waves, lovers can take a moonlight stroll, nature enthusiasts can explore the jungles and photographers can capture the wonderful moments. There is no denying that the town has unlimited things to offer. Moreover, the city is fairly inexpensive and tourist friendly so travelers can enjoy their retreat to the fullest. This retreat includes three healthy and delicious meals per day at lodge (restaurant and sushi restaurant on site). You will have the option to purchase smoothies, fresh green juices, alcoholic drinks, additional appetizers, and desserts. Daily tea and water refills.

ATV tours and rentals

Start the engine and get ready for an adventure. Lots of fun, drive all over, even make a trip to the close-by Montezuma waterfalls.

Canopy tours

Explore a unique and adrenaline-filled environment, and fly through the treetops hundreds of meters in the air with a chance to spot some of the diverse wildlife.

Fishing

A half-day or full-day fishing trip can be arranged. Catch yellow fin, tuna, dorado, or red snapper.

Hiking

Take a stroll along the seemingly endless white sand beach, or visit some nearby national parks such as Cabo Blanco National Park and Cabulla National Park. There are amazing tropical trees and flowers, exotic fruits, monkeys, red foxes, boas, and many birds.

Horseback riding

Nothing compares to running a horse along a tropical beach, and watching the sunset on the horizon. It is possible to arrange tours in the jungle, on the beaches, and into the mountains.

Kayak adventure and fishing

Enjoy scenic kayaking in the Pacific ocean, or paddle up the close-by rivers exploring the jungle and its wild life. Catch fish from the kayak, and explore the steamy underwater volcanoes below during a 3-hour tour.

Monkey watching

Spend mornings or evenings watching the howler monkeys traversing the beautiful vegetation on the lodge's own grounds.

SUP tours

SUP or stand up paddle is an exciting sport that is a true full-body workout. Enjoy an alternative to surfing by using a paddle. It is easy to learn, and suited for all levels of skill.

Surfing

Just a 4-minute walk from the bungalow is the beach and a famous surf point. Santa Teresa beach has some of the best and least crowded surf in the world. There are choices to the north and the south on the beach. The water is always warm, and the waves are always big enough. Surfing needs are available, and there will be an arranged private lesson to those who want to learn.

Other activities

During your free time, you could book for private yoga lessons with Mary, or stand up paddleboard (SUP) and SUP yoga lessons with Mary or Christian. Christian will also be hosting holistic nutrition consultations and SUP yoga inversion workshops. Additionally, you could take extra surf lessons with Mary and local Santa Teresa surf instructors. You can also take a boat trip to Tortuga island for 55 USD per person or enjoy a hot springs excursion to Arenal Volcano.

Driving directions from Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO)

  • Driving from the San Jose Airport to Puntarenas takes approximately 2 hours.
  • In Puntarenas, you board the ferry to Paquera (30 minutes' ride) across the Gulf of Nicoya.
  • From Paquera, it takes about an hour to Mal Pais, Santa Teresa.

Arrival by airplane

Mal Pais, Santa Teresa is 40 minutes away from the domestic airport of Tambor. There are daily flights from San Jose to / from Tambor. The flight is about 35 minutes. Fly direct from San Jose to Tambor, than take a taxi to Mal Pais, Santa Teresa. You can make reservations prior to your arrival at Sansa or NatureAir.

Arrival by bus

There is a direct bus from the downtown San Jose bus station. Bus schedule may change. Usually the bus leaves at 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. from the San Jose center.

Arrival by shuttle
