53 Day Online Cultivating The Jhana Factors Course with Shaila Catherine

Online Meditation Course

This course will develop deep meditative concentration. The focus will be the cultivation of five jhāna factors - directed attention, sustained attention, joy, happiness, and one-pointed attention. These factors develop in the natural course of meditation and strengthen concentration. We will identify and nurture the jhāna factors in meditation and also in daily activities.

This course is suitable for students with previous mindfulness-based meditation experience.

Pre-application requirements

This course is recommended for students with previous meditation experience. Specific skills are not required, but this course would be most useful for students with an already established mindfulness-based meditation practice. You will need a computer with dependable internet access, a browser, and standard (freely available) software for listening to audio files and viewing PDF documents. A mobile app is available for Moodle courseware. However, while convenient during travel, it is not entirely satisfactory for regular participation. A computer is preferable. The lectures and guided meditations are streamed, not downloadable. Depending upon the service contract with your internet provider, you may incur data charges to listen to the lectures.

How the course works

The course is entirely online and includes recorded lectures and guided meditation instructions, readings, sutta study, peer-led discussion forums, a library of resources, and optional audio conferences with Shaila Catherine. These live audio conference sessions are open to all class participants; recordings are later made available within the course for those who could not attend the live event. These group conference calls may include reflections on the lesson topic, questions and answers about applying course topics to your meditation practice, or the study of a sutta.

Practical questions and comments related to meditation and the course materials are invited.

Students will also interact through the written peer-to-peer discussion forums.

Daily meditation practice is strongly encouraged.

Timing of sessions (GMT-7)

This course combines self-study with conference sessions with Shaila Catherine. Each learning module will span 7 to 14 days, and during that designated period, you may work at your own pace. The assignments will likely require about three hours per week, depending on your level of interest and inquiry.

Students may join the course from any time zone. Conference calls are scheduled in Pacific Time, and recorded for those who cannot attend the live event. Timing of live sessions will be given upon booking, but are usually offered at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time.
