Perched atop a wooded hillside in the hamlet of Cragsmoor, the Dharmakaya Center for Wellbeing is surrounded by nearly 100 acres of forest. With only 24 bedrooms, they offer an intimate retreat experience. They support that experience by offering three delicious vegetarian buffets per day, walking paths and outdoor meditation spaces, a library with a fireplace, a fire pit, and of course their lovely, comfortable accommodations. Group organizers appreciate their breathtaking location, elegant new facility and the administrative support, and years of experience to ensure a smooth retreat.

Their two dormitories offer a simple, peaceful environment that supports your retreat experience, with rooms for those on both personal and solitary retreats. Each room has a meditation cushion and zabuton. All guests are welcome, but not required, to join the daily meditation and other activities (although separate tickets are required for all ticketed events). Their large solitary retreat rooms have a double bed, private bath, private terrace, a refrigerator, and ample room for practice. Their private rooms have a double bed and room for private meditation with a shared bath.

Rooms may be shared by those in a committed relationship. Washers and dryers are located in both birch house and oak house, and detergent is in the cabinet above the machines. Retreatants may do their own laundry for 2 USD per half hour. Please contact a center staff member to pay and get a key. They provide bedding and towels for each room. While they cannot offer daily service, if your retreat lasts longer than a week, you will get a fresh set of sheets and towels.

Program

Is Buddhism a religion or a philosophy? Is it the same thing as mindfulness? How does karma work? Does meditation really relieve stress? Why? This engaging weekend program of interactive teachings and discussions will answer (many of) your questions about:

  • The historic Buddha
  • The core Buddhist teachings on compassion, wisdom, karma, emptiness, and impermanence
  • The scientific basis of many of the practices
  • How to meditate

When not in the class, you can relax in the center’s beautiful and tranquil environment. Enjoy the view from the patio or a nearby hike, curl up with a book in the library, or contemplate the stars while sitting by the fire pit. You are always welcome to join the regularly scheduled center activities, including the center’s Sunday study program.

Highlights of the retreat

  • Intimate setting with personal access to the teacher
  • Interactive sessions with the question and answer periods
  • Personal and guided meditations
  • Delicious all-vegetarian meals with locally sourced ingredients
  • Option to extend stay on personal retreat
  • Extensive library of dharma books
  • Expansive wooded grounds with beautiful flora and fauna
