Free Spirit Travel welcomes you in La Gomera, one of the least-known of the Canary Islands with a temperate climate and great tranquillity. This island is extremely popular with walkers because of the contrasting landscapes; the coastline dotted with villages, the mountainous core of misty rainforests, banana plantations, and terraces. Caroline, your yoga teacher, will make sure you get an all-encompassing experience during your yoga retreat.
There is a range of accommodation available onsite. Staying within the tropical garden is amazing with the sounds of the birds and the frogs and your own garden area with table and chairs. Most standard rooms also overlook the garden and en-suite rooms and apartments face the ocean.
For those students staying in the garden or the standard rooms, there are four places to shower, one with one shower and one toilet, one with two showers and toilets and one with three showers and two toilets, and one private shower and toilet. Please ask Free Spirit Travel if you wish to be very close to a shower or toilet - most rooms are close, however, one summerhouse and also the A-frame are a little further away.
A row of prettily decorated rooms along a shared shady veranda, with the use of shared showers and bathrooms at either end. Quiet and comfortable, each room is simply designed and most have washbasins. Four rooms have twin beds and one room has a double bed. Showers and toilets are close by the garden rooms.
A row of en-suite rooms is located at the heart of the finca facing the sea. Each has a small private balcony overlooking the tropical garden at rear, except for Room 6 which has a private sea-facing veranda. Each room is entered via patio doors from the communal sea view veranda.
The venue has two swimming pools, one smaller and sheltered for hiding away, and one full size for cooling swims in the heat of the day.
During your retreat, you can be sure of experiencing a broad range of yoga styles that will enable you to develop, fulfill, and strengthen your own practice. Caroline will make sure you get an all-encompassing experience during your yoga retreat and will teach three classes per day.
Each day will commence with early morning meditation and pranayama with opportunities to chant and learn about healing mantra. If you don't already have a meditation practice, this is a great opportunity to start.
There will be a short break before the morning yoga session, which will consist of sun salutations and vinyasa flow to heat the body and then specific work on postures. Each yoga class taught by Caroline will follow a theme or have a specific intention so that our work on the mat relates back to yoga principles and into life off the mat.
The afternoon yoga session will complement the morning session so that we maintain a balance of Yin and Yang, dynamic and yielding, energising and healing. There will be plenty of opportunity for yoga nidra, healing mantra and hands-on massage work.
It is Caroline's intention to work with everyone's requirements in mind. Her style of teaching welcomes all levels from experienced teachers to complete beginners - all will be nurtured and at the same time challenged! That is the essence of Yoga!
Ken's workshop is suitable for all levels. The morning class will be Hatha Flow with a Feldenkrais influence, the afternoons are developmental and restorative, bringing in Ken's vast body of knowledge of the Feldenkrais Method.
The developmental movement technique, The Feldenkrais Method, has been Ken's lifelong study, especially in how it relates and is complementary to yoga, through the awareness of movement and being attentive to detail. For Ken, The Feldenkrais Method forms the bridge between hands-on healing, touch and the spontaneity of life as a dance. The Feldenkrais Method named after its originator, Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, is an educational system that uses gentle movement and directed attention to improve posture and human functioning. One can increase the ease and range of motion, improve flexibility and rediscover the natural capacity for efficient movement.
British Wheel of Yoga (Yoga)
A qualified British Wheel of Yoga teacher at senior level, Caroline is based in Guernsey in the Channel Islands. She has received training from and studied under such world-leading tutors as Anne-Marie Newland, David Sye, Duncan Wong, Cameron Shayne (creator of the founder of Budokon, USA) and Ana Forrest. During a recent workshop in advanced teacher training, Ana Forrest said that she would gladly hire Caroline. Caroline regularly runs classes and workshops in Guernsey, as well as yoga retreats in the Channel Islands, UK, and abroad.
Ken Eyerman is an American based in London since 1980. He has 30 years experience with Yoga and Bodywork, and is a trained practitioner of the Feldenkrais Method. He will bring his wealth of learning to this weeks' unique blend of flowing yoga with gentle inner sensing Feldenkrais movement awareness lessons. Ken's intuitive and spontaneous, hands-on approach places an emphasis on using the breath, an awareness of your inner process and how to use your body efficiently. This combination of approaches will ease you into the postures.
This yoga holiday is located in La Gomera, an island in Spain’s Canary Island chain. The venue is magical as this venue has it all. It's secluded with its own organic farm, a huge choice of accommodation, and two swimming pools - step over the wall and you are on the beach!
The venue is completely hidden along the cliff-face, in a secluded bay, ten minutes walk from the village of Vuelta. It is located beside the ocean with a pebble beach. Behind the tropical garden, the land has been transformed by permaculture gardening techniques into a lush and highly productive small organic farm with its own natural spring.
During your stay, you will enjoy three superb organic vegetarian buffet meals per day. An honesty bar operates from which you may purchase fruit drinks, beer, and wine. Black tea, coffee, herb tea made from fresh herbs, and drinking water are all provided free of charge 24 hours. Snacks are also put out between meals although with three vegetarian meals a day you may not need these!
On one day, usually Tuesday evening, you will eat out as the on-site restaurant is closed. This is not included in the cost of your holiday. On this evening, if you don't want to go into the village to a restaurant, you can raid the venue's fridge and cook yourself something in their kitchen.
Ten minutes walk away is the village. There, you can find lots of cafes and small shops plus an air of calmness and old-fashioned tourism. There are several long sandy beaches, a great cake shop, and a homemade ice cream parlor - try their 88% chocolate ice cream!
For the energetics, there are rainforest walks, dolphin boat rides, kayaking trips, and mountain biking. Book these individually in the village or ask the office to arrange a group booking.
A variety of early morning and afternoon meditation classes are held on-site in addition to your yoga program, you are welcome to attend these at no extra cost or just relax and spend your days basking in the sunshine on the lawns looking out to the balmy sea.
Therapies such as Ayurvedic massage and Reiki are available every day at an extra cost.
Please book your flights to arrive at Tenerife-South Airport (TFS). It is recommended that you book a morning flight. From there, make your way to Los Cristianos ferry port, which is approximately 15 minutes from the airport, and then catch the ferry to San Sebastion. On arrival at San Sebastion, you can take a taxi or the bus to Valle Gran Rey. There will be a group transfer from the 14:00 ferry from there.
