Join this journey to the birthplace of the Buddha in Nepal, along with daily guided meditation sessions and exciting jungle safari. During this retreat, you will learn about the daily lifestyles of monks, the introduction to Buddhist Philosophy, as well as enjoy a jungle safari and elephant walks. This retreat will take you from Kathmandu to Bharatpur (Lumbini) and a jeep ride from Chitwan to Kathmandu.
The journey will start by staying at a beautiful Tibetan Buddhist monastery, overlooking the entire Kathmandu Valley. This gives you an incredible opportunity to witness Buddhist monks in their daily lives and to immerse yourselves in the Himalayan Buddhist culture.
In Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, you will stay in a nice guesthouse near the main sacred sites. While in Chitwan, you will be staying at a beautiful lodge near the jungle. From there, you can rest, swim in the pool, enjoy the amazing wildlife in the vicinity and surrounding of the jungle, and go for walks with the elephants into the jungle.
With this pilgrimage journey, you will be spending the first days in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal, exploring the Pharping Valley and its many sacred sites. You will be staying in a beautiful Tibetan Buddhist monastery located in Pharping, to receive daily guided meditation sessions and introduction to Buddhist philosophy.
From there, the group will journey southward to the birthplace of the Buddha in Lumbini, near the border between India and Nepal. The group will pilgrimage in Lumbini for a few days, visit the Buddha’s birthplace and the sacred sites of the area.
Then, the group will journey 2-3 hours by road to a beautiful lodge near the Chitwan jungle. From there, you can rest, swim in the pool, enjoy the amazing wildlife in the vicinity and surrounding of the jungle, and go for walks with the elephants into the jungle. If you are lucky, you will be able to spot rhinos, tigers, wild deer, birds, and other wildlife.
Upon the return to Kathmandu on day 8 and 9, the group will stay in Boudha and visit both Boudha Stupa and Swayambhu Stupa.
Arrival and pick up at Tribhuvan International Airport of Kathmandu. You will be taken straight to a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Pharping, the South Western corner of the Kathmandu Valley. Here, you will have time to rest, go for a walk, or enjoy the spectacular views over Kathmandu Valley. In the afternoon, there will be an introduction to the pilgrimage by the Himalayan Hermitage facilitator.
Morning meditation session followed by breakfast. There will be an introduction session to Buddhist philosophy before lunch. After lunch and a rest, you will go on hike through rice fields to visit the Asura cave and the self-arisen Tara in Pharping. Dinner and meditation session. You will spend the night at the Tibetan Buddhist monastery guesthouse.
In the morning, you will fly to Lumbini. After lunch, you will settle in at the hotel. In the evening there will be a Dharma talk and introduction to Lumbini. Meditation session after dinner.
Morning meditation session followed by breakfast. You will spend the day visiting the Buddha’s birthplace and exploring the monasteries of the different Buddhist traditions. You will move around on bicycle inside the inner area of Lumbini. Rest followed by dinner. Evening meditation.
After breakfast, you will travel two to three hours by jeep to the beautiful Tharu Lodge. After lunch, you can rest at the lodge or have a swim in the pool. Afternoon walk on the premises. Dinner and evening meditation.
Morning meditation practice and discussion. In the middle of the day it is possible to take a rest and a dip in the lovely pool. Evening jungle walk with the elephants. Evening meditation.
After breakfast, you will return to Kathmandu by jeep, which takes between four and five hours. Lunch, rest, and free time until dinner at a rooftop restaurant near the magnificent Boudha Stupa. Evening meditation.
After breakfast, you will walk to Shechen Monastery. There will be a meditation session in the meditation room of Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, one of the greatest Tibetan Buddhist masters of our time. After lunch, the group will have a closing circle with homemade chai in Swayambhu. Back to Boudha for dinner.
Day of departure. Transportation to the airport is provided.
During this retreat, you will get to visit the birthplace of Buddha, different world heritage, hiking, as well as a jungle safari and elephant walk in Chitwan. During the eighth and ninth day in Boudha, you will be visiting the Boudha Stupa and Swayambhu Stupa.

She has ten years of experience with meditation practice and for the last years, guiding meditation at the Himalayan Buddhist Meditation Center (HBMC) in Kathmandu, combined with local experience as a freelance consultant for various international organisations, her studies of Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and Tibetan language, as well as working as a travel guide in the Himalayan region are the basis of her expertise to found Himalayan hermitage.
Originally from Montreal, Canada Alex has been based in Nepal for the last number of years and has in-depth knowledge on the many sacred sites of Nepal and the Himalayas. Alex has studied Buddhist philosophy at a Tibetan monastery in Boudha, Kathmandu and is therefore familiar with a traditional classical Tibetan learning environment. At the same time, Alex’s studies in Tibetan Buddhism have stemmed from a psychological or secular interest, which comes out when he introduces these foundational Buddhist practices to a Western audience.
During this retreat, healthy vegetarian meals will be served throughout the journey.

Please book your flight to arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu, Nepal. Himalayan Hermitage will meet you at the airport and transfer to the retreat location. The visa for Nepal is easily obtained upon arrival and it costs 25 USD for 15 days or 40 USD for 30 days.
