Kin-Hin is a meditation and yoga center offering daily Zen meditation and Hatha yoga retreats and classes with Sivananda style along with a personal homestay accommodation.

Karen Sivan

Karen came to India in 1997 for a three-week holiday and decided to make Kerala her home. For 10 years, she ran yoga and massage holidays in Kovalam. From 2007 until mid-2012, she lived, worked, served, and followed Zen at Bodhi Zendo, blessed to have guidance and support from a Zen master, AMA Samy. She then returned to the "marketplace" and began a new chapter with Kin-Hin. She is also a qualified aromatherapist with over 20-year experience. Her diploma in holistic aromatherapy was obtained from the Tisserand Institute in London in 1993.

Sivan

Sivan grew up in Pachalloor. He is an experienced yoga teacher in India and Europe and he has a wealth of local knowledge about the area and its customs.

"Home away from home"

I wholeheartedly recommend stay at Karen and Sivan’s place. I loved everything about it- my cosy room, meditation and yoga classes adjusted to my abilities, delicious breakfast and dinners eaten together. Everything is perfectly organised: great email contact, airport pick-up and drop-off, additional trips, contact to trustworthy tuk-tuk drivers. At Kin-Hin you do not feel like a customer but like a family friend- always well taken care of. It is a wonderful place to relax, re-connect with yourself and re-charge your batteries. I look forward to coming back there!

"Just amazing "

"Great experience "

Staying at Karen and Sivan's place made my boyfriend and I feel like we were visiting a family friend's house whilst abroad. It was so nice to have delicious home-cooked food everyday. The room had a kettle, fridge, good wifi and nice hot shower. Overall, we were very well looked-after and had a lovely time.

We did 4 nights 5 days of yoga and meditation and were near beginners to both. As we were the only people there, we had a totally personal service so the classes were the right level for us.

I would recommend getting a meal at the nearby temple one day for a truly local experience. I also had a cooking lesson one day with Sivan which was great.

"Amazing experience "

We had 5 days with Karen and Sivan that was absolutely delightful. The yoga and meditation program was just what we needed after travelling through Rajasthan. The excellent teaching and tiny classes improved our strength and flexibility. The classes were undoubtedly the best I have ever done. We very much enjoyed the lovely clean and comfortable room and the fruit salad at breakfast was incredible. Thank you Karen and Sivan for an awesome experience!

"Family Yoga holiday in Kerala"

This yoga experience was by far the highlight of our first trip to India. Karen made everything incredibly easy, right from the first mails, organising a taxi to meet us at the airport, arranging trips during the day and coming with us on some of them, and then booking trains for our onward journey. It was just the right mix of time to be together as a family and time to do yoga and meditation together and day trips to places we wouldn't have gone to if it hadn't been for Karen and Shivan. The food was lovely and they even catered for our son (with Down's Syndrome) who was a little nervous about spicy food.

The early morning meditation and yoga on the rooftop surrounded by coconut palms, monkeys, birds and the sound of waves on the beach is something that none of us will forget! Sometimes other people joined us for the sessions and Shivan was always able to adapt the sessions to different levels of experience. Our son initially refused to join in, falling asleep on his mat but was soon encouraged to take part and loved it.

This was a perfect Christmas reunion for our family of 5 - our children are 28, 26 and 24 - all sharing new and exciting experiences together and I would thoroughly recommend it both for families, singles and groups. Very friendly and Karen and Shivan go out of their way to make the holiday perfect.

"A lovely snap shot of Kerala"

Karen and Sivan were lovely hosts and even acted as my guides to the local area. The meditation sessions on the roof were wonderful and I shall miss them! I'm very much a beginner to yoga and Sivan tailored the sessions to my level. The food was super tasty!

I stayed at the Kin-Hin Zen Centre with a friend in the beginning of April 2016 for about five days. I really liked the quiet and the peace of this very open center, with a gentle rhythm of morning meditation, morning yoga, and evening meditation. The guestrooms are clean, spacious, and pleasant, there is a nice outside balcony, and Karen's fruit salads for breakfast are delicious. Karen and Sivan are not only great teachers. but they are also very happy to help you organize small excursions in the area. Both Trivandrum and Kovalam Beaches are within a short bus or rickshaw ride. Trivandrum Zoo is a must place to visit. Since The life of Pi, it's on everybody's list! I liked Kin-Hin very much as it is a base from where to further explore if you want, or a nice place to be, which has a soul with its relaxed schedule and positive outlook on life. I certainly got what I was looking for and hope to go back!

If you are looking for a piece of zen paradise, Kin-Hin Zen Centre is the place for you. We booked a five-day meditation and yoga retreat at the center and it was one of the highpoints of our trip to India. The center is well located in the peaceful village of Pachaloor, just minutes away from busy Trivandrum and touristy Kovalam Beach. Our room was lovely. It was clean and zen, big enough for our backpacker needs, with access to a private balcony to chill out. Our host Karen led our meditation sessions on the roof: We were surrounded by palm trees and could hear birds, nearby ocean waves, and occasionally, neighborhood temple music. Hatha yoga session followed with teacher Sivan, who gently but firmly pushed us to our limits through a strong yoga routine, with just enough variety positions to keep us captivated. One session was interrupted by monkeys passing by in the street. Breakfast and dinner were taken at the center at the couple’s table or balcony. We got the chance of tasting Karen’s epic, world-famous fruit salad, as well as local food cooked at home, while chatting with our hosts about the region, local traditions, travelers tips, and others. They made us feel right at home with their generosity and warmth. We also were able to relax with a wonderful ayurvedic massage.
