In this retreat, you have an opportunity to receive the input of an experienced therapist and teacher in personal growth, tailored for your particular situation and needs. Le Sentier Tranquille can equip you to set out with confidence and insight. You will work together on your program for your stay, which might include mindfulness and meditation teaching, counselling, creative and insight therapies, reading, writing, walking, and nature.
For this meditation retreat, you will be provided with four nights accommodation in Le Sentier Tranquille. You will have an individual accommodation and private bathroom. The decor and settings are designed to be relaxing and friendly and in keeping with the philosophy of the center to offer privacy and companionship.
All therapeutic work, coaching, and teaching on this retreat is on a one-to-one basis. For this reason, there will not be more than one other person staying. It is only in this way that Simon can be sure that he will have enough time for what is appropriate for each guest-client. Similarly, there is no need to have a fixed schedule of activities.
You will work out what is most appropriate and helpful for you when you arrive. This might be a routine for each day, or it might be something much more fluid and spontaneous, to respond to mood, to nature, and also to weather.
The basis of all the work is person-centred, in the humanistic tradition of Carl Rogers. The essence of the approach is to work with each person as they are, using their own innate personality and uniqueness, abilities and aspirations, to achieve a harmony for them from which can come fulfilment and satisfaction.
Le Sentier Tranquille believes that there is no place for formula or dogma in the sphere of interpersonal growth and development, because each of you is individual and deserving a special attention. The therapeutic way of growth also comes from creative companionship, not theory, and the meditation and mindfulness are rooted in the primary processes of living in the world of today.
As quoted from Pathways, it says, "this living is like a maze, you always know there is a way through, but the twists and turns become life itself. And always you want to be somewhere else".
Mindfulness has tended to be associated with Buddhism because of its focus entirely on being present, in a way that is similar to the practice of Buddhist approach to meditation. However, the practice of mindfulness does not pre-suppose a need to understand Buddhist psychology or be a “believer” in any sense.
There is a growing body of research into the beneficial effect of the ‘brain-state’ of mindfulness on temperament, day-to-day responses, and well-being. Le Sentier Tranquille are not concerned to convert or to prove, rather explain how and why they offer to train guests in mindfulness and meditation if they wish.
They tend to spend most of your life a long way from being completely “in the moment”. They are usually very far from just doing what they are engaged in. Whatever they are doing, even if they are simply standing looking at a view, they are giving themselves a running commentary on why you are there, what they think about what they are doing, how they come to be doing it at all, and finding myriad memories and connections floating in your thoughts.
It is not just in your heads. If they could look at yourself, on your face, they would see a portrayal of what you are feeling and the tensions and discomforts of your life’s conditioning.
As part of the program, Le Sentier Tranquille will arrange a visit away from the center. This is likely to be to a mountain location, but it could also be a local town or market. In any case, the cost of this will be covered in the overall price.
Best-selling author Simon Cole ('Stillness in Mind', 'Along the Way', 'Pathways') is a senior-accredited counsellor and for over 30 years has been offering therapy and training in different settings in UK, France and online. Accepting of all faiths and all approaches, his philosophy and teaching spans mindfulness, meditation, being in relation and counselling in the humanistic tradition. He draws on the work of leading western thinkers and the insights of Martin Buber into presence in relationships.
Janet was a teacher since the advent of comprehensive education, and it is still something she believes passionately in. One important thing she learned early on is that everyone learns by teaching. Her philosophy has always been to say "yes" and accept any challenge or opportunity offered. She started teaching physics and ended up as head of ICT and responsible for the school's Learning Resources Center. At Le Sentier Tranquille, she enjoys working in the garden and cooking for people.
Le Sentier Tranquille is located on the edge of a hamlet adjacent to the ancient forests of Ariège. The area forms part of the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains which lie between France, Spain, and Andorra. The location is secluded, partly bounded by a stream, and the domain has been sitting and working spaces of different styles and atmosphere, to facilitate individual contemplation, meditation, and inspiration.
All meals are provided and included in the cost: breakfast with cereals, bread and pastries with jams and marmalades, and yoghurts; lunch of two courses, which might be hot or cold; evening meal with three courses with aperitif and wine (pescatarian or vegetarian on request).
As an alternative to meat dishes, you will be provided with varied and imaginative vegetarian menus if they are required. Le Sentier Tranquille do not, however, cater for vegan (which is quite difficult in France). They will do their best to accommodate medically required diets (as long as you are told in advance), but you cannot offer support for nut allergy or celiac conditions. Cool water, fruits, and biscuits are also available at all times of day in the dining room.
The focus of your stay will be personal growth through counseling and mindfulness. However, there will be time to browse the library, play music, if you wish, and simply enjoy the ambiance of the tranquil setting. You will be able to go walking into the wild from the gate and walk into the foothills or mountains of the Pyrenees, solo or accompanied, can be part of your personal therapeutic growth.

Please book your flight to arrive at Toulouse–Blagnac Airport (TLS) or Carcassonne Airport (CCF). Airlines flying to these airports from the UK, Ireland, and different European airports include Air France, British Airways, Aer Lingus, EasyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 and FlyBe. Le Sentier Tranquille provides transfers to Toulouse Airport for 35 EUR and Carcassonne Airport for 20 EUR.
Coming by train, you can take the Eurostar Paris connection. TGV trains from Paris to Toulouse come via Bordeux. If you come via Paris you must change trains and stations in Paris, for which you should allow 90 minutes. If you change trains at Lille (on the way to Paris), it is only a platform change, which is a lot easier, but the fare is quite a bit more expensive.
In Toulouse you change onto the train which comes to Pamiers and goes on to Foix, Ax-les-Thermes and then to the border with Andorra. From many parts of England and Wales it is possible to do the complete journey in a day, if you are prepared to start early. Le Sentier Tranquille provides transfers to Pamiers Station for 10 EUR.
