This learning retreat will combine formal learning in Qigong practices and theory with excursions and plenty of free time. Your instructor and guide, Dawn Aarons, has over 30 years of experience practicing and teaching Qigong. She is an acupuncturist from Canada who spends much of her time in Melaque. She is fluent in Spanish and is excited to show you a "real" Mexican experience. Enjoy the sun, sand, and warmth of Melaque on a vacation you will never forget.
This boutique hotel is one year old. All rooms are clean and fresh with private bathrooms and air conditioning. A large common space on the top floor (under a palapa or thatched roof) will serve as the main classroom and hang out area.
The hotel is located 2.5 blocks from the beach with friendly and accommodating staff. Evening musical performances will be held on the palapa and in local bars or restaurants.
The focus of this week of learning will be on what Learning on Vacation call "Elephant Qigong". The group will focus on back health and what you can learn about the whole body through the back. And this includes the state of all the internal organs.
Qigong ("Work with Energy") studies are open to all. No previous experience needed.
Optional excursions included in the package:
Dawn (known as Didi in Mexico) is the coordinator of Learning on Vacation, an acupuncturist, Tai Chi / Qigong enthusiast, and meditator. Dawn teaches with a focus on body alignment, balance, and relaxation. Her “journey not destination” approach includes humor and lots of individual attention. Fluent in Spanish and well integrated into the Melaque community, Dawn will also lead excursions and assist however she is needed. She is thrilled to share her love of the area and appreciates how introducing it to others helps her to keep seeing the place with fresh eyes.
San Patricio Melaque is a fishing village on the Pacific Coast (between Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta) that has become very popular with West Coast Canadians and Americans. The community is friendly and appreciates tourism, as tourism has become its number one industry.
Fishing continues to be an important industry as well as farming in the surrounding areas. There are diverse ecosystems in the area and numerous plants, and animals.
A delicious Mexican style breakfast will be served every morning. Local restaurants and grocery stores will be pleased to help you to enjoy delicious meals around town for lunch and dinner. At the same time, your patronage will be a great benefit to the local economy (especially since November is the end of the “low season” and your pesos will make a real difference).
It is recommended not to drink water directly from the tap. Even the local people use filtered water and definitely, all restaurants use only filtered water and wash fruits and vegetables carefully.
Filtered water will be made easily available to you. Almost everyone here uses water from a “garafon”, a large plastic container. Full containers are sold from trucks that drive around the neighborhood. The hotel will provide all the water you need. Feel free to fill up water bottles at the hotel. It is fine to shower in the tap water.
Playa de Oro International Airport
Air transfers are included for those arriving at Playa de Oro International Airport (ZLO) late Monday afternoon. Learning on Vacation recommends participants to fly to Mexico City first. From Mexico City the recommended flight is number 2568 with Aeromexico, which leaves Mexico City at 18:05 (note that the time of this flight changed, it was at 16:30 before. Times continue to be subject to change).
