Would you like to have a calm, healthy and peaceful mind in daily life and at the time of death? Do you wish to support others who are going through the death process? If so, come and explore the Buddhist approach to life, death, and beyond! If there is one certain thing in life, it is death. It can come at any time, and it can be a beautiful process if you are prepared for it.
Mahamudra Centre is situated on 8 acres in the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. It offers various accommodation options to fit any budget (more details below). Total indoor capacity is 30 beds, and camping is also available.
The meditation hall is always open. The community building has a lounge, dining tables, library and outdoor sitting areas, as well as a small shop which is open during office hours.
The grounds are beautifully landscaped with lawns, flower and vegetable gardens, fruit trees, bamboo and other trees native to New Zealand.
Accommodation options include self-contained cabins, private rooms, shared rooms, and camping facilities.
The rooms are housed in the same building as the Gompa (meditation hall). Guests enjoy a peaceful natural environment surrounded by views of beautiful hillsides and gardens. There is a clean and modern shared toilets / showers facility. Heaters are provided in all rooms in winter.

The self-contained cabins (with private bathroom and kitchenette) are ideal for individuals who wish to be supported in personal retreat, or to enjoy more privacy during a group retreat. The cabins all have private decks and gardens, with beautiful views of the centre grounds and surrounding hillsides. Heaters are provided in winter. Tents, campervans and small buses can be pitched / parked in the open grounds near the Gompa (the meditation hall). Campers enjoy a peaceful natural environment surrounded by views of beautiful hillsides. There is a clean and modern shared toilets / showers facility. No hook-ups available, but devices may be charged in the lounge in the community building.
The program will include teachings, discussions, and meditation sessions, covering the Buddhist approach to life and death. In between sessions, you will have time to rest and enjoy the beautiful grounds of the Mahamudra Retreat Centre.
This course will provide you with tools to compassionately and skillfully talk about death, support others in their death process and prepare yourself for your own peaceful passing. The retreat will also cover subjects such as the different stages, dissolutions, and internal and external signs that occur during the death process, according to the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism.
Through teachings, discussion and meditation, you will explore the following topics:
Ven. Khadro was born in Venezuela of European parents, emigrated to New Zealand in 2004, and has led courses and retreats in New Zealand, Australia, Colombia, India, Nepal, and Germany. Her international background allows her to have an open, friendly, and warm manner. Ven. Khadro is currently studying an online Master Programme in Buddhist Philosophy and lives in semi-retreat at Lawudo, a hermitage in the Himalayas, Nepal. She is a Buddhist Chaplain, an FPMT registered teacher, and has served in various FPMT centers around the world.
Delicious vegetarian buffet-style meals are provided. The centre can cater for gluten-free, vegan, and other dietary requirements on request - PLEASE SPECIFY WHEN BOOKING.
The main meal is served at lunch time, with a lighter meal of soup and toast in the evening.

The trip from Auckland to Mahamudra takes approximately three and a half hours. Half the drive is over beautiful and winding coastal roads. The advantage of having a car means flexibility to see the many amazing attractions in the Coromandel Peninsula.
If you are driving up for a course or retreat and are willing to share rides, please let Mahamudra know when you are registering. It can be a huge help to other participants!

Please book your flight to arrive at Auckland Airport (AKL). Airport transfer is not included in the price, but may be available for an additional cost - please contact Mahamudra for details. For onward travel by bus, see below.
There is one daily bus from Thames to Coromandel town, leaving in the morning. See the Intercity website for the latest timetables and for connections to Thames from Auckland and elsewhere in NZ.
