Surrounded by 500 acres of exquisite native beech forests, rugged mountain ranges, gardens, and terraces, Maruia Retreat is an extensive natural estate nestled alongside the magnificent Maruia River. The estate showcases its beauty through the extensive nature trails found on the property. In close proximity to the lodge, both Braeburn and Lyell tracks are perfect for guests wanting to explore the glorious inner West Coast region.

Traversed by five creeks, Maruia River Retreat is home to wild deer, goats, numerous native bird species and boasts some of the best fly fishing New Zealand has to offer. Private chartered flights and scenic aerial tours can be arranged as the estate has a 480-meter airstrip, a private hangar, and a helicopter landing area.

The estate is fronted by the Maruia River, which runs for over a kilometer from the very doorstep of the Maruia Estate. Offering a multitude of recreational adventures, guests are invited to swim, raft, or kayak in the gin-clear waters of the Maruia River, just a stone’s throw away from the villas.

A stunning display of estate history and beauty, the Maruia River Retreat gardens have been carefully maintained and manicured for over 40 years. A full sensory experience, the garden follows the edge of the rambling Maruia River and features exotic and native flora and fauna, gently sloping lawns, a fruit orchard, and an organic kitchen garden bearing delicious seasonal produce. Explore Maruia’s botanical beauty and inquire about the private garden tours.

Maruia River Retreat is constantly developing their walking tracks to open an ever-increasing amount of terrain for you to enjoy and explore.

The heart of Maruia

The Main Lodge is designed to be at the heart of the Maruia experience, providing a base for gathering, relaxing, and dining to guests during their stay. The former luxury fishing lodge has undergone a full refurbishment, with impeccable attention to detail and carefully considered design led by a leading local furniture and design company, creating a space for modern-day comfort.

Guests are invited to enjoy fresh, wholesome, locavore food prepared in the gourmet kitchen in either the dining room or the 4-Season outdoor room where they are able to relax and linger as they please. The open space of the contemporary lounge and bar is a welcoming spot for a morning coffee or to sample the local wines and craft beers on offer.

The aim is to awaken the breathing muscles and develop proper breathing habits through the practice of ancient yogic and qi gong techniques. This has the dual effect of expanding your lung capacity and while creating an elegant, graceful unconscious breath, leading to more energy, better sleep, and an overall sense of calm.

Evenings will be spent learning the healing modalities of the breath, all the while beginning to explore meditation. For those that are ready, the seminar culminates with a delve into the “infinite breath”, a powerful technique that can eventually lead to the yogic experience of Samadhi.

Lectures and exercises will be held either on-site or on guided walks. Daily yoga classes are optional, but attendance is encouraged as this acts as a powerful adjunct to the seminar by tying breath into movement.

You will learn

  • Exploring the breath and energy connection
  • Fundamental and advanced breathing techniques from Pranayama and other ancient traditions
  • Breathing Anatomy
  • Rejuvenation using the breath
  • Breath and movement (incorporating the breath into a traditional hatha yoga practice)
  • Healing with the breath (accessing the vagus response)
  • Awakening the third eye
  • Discovering Kundalini

Workshop schedule

There will be 2 classes daily - pranayama, meditation, and yoga (asana) as well as lectures and workshops throughout the 3 days.

  • Day 1: 4 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
