The Plaka is old Athens, like a small island in the middle of the city, somewhere, where you can minimize contact with the aspects of modern Athenian life, many people find unpleasant, cars, pollution, noise, and crowds. The Plaka is a great area to be in, if you like shopping, eating, wandering around or just plain hanging out watching people. It adjoins the Monastiraki flea market area where you can find souvenirs of every type and to every taste. There are archaeological sites to wander around or cafeterias to sit in for those of you who do not like to shop.
