Whenever we hear the word ‘Meditation’, the first picture that comes to mind is yogis and saffron-robed gurujis sitting quietly on the banks of a river or in an isolated place, trying to connect something greater than ourselves.

We think of it as more of a spiritual practice that is not meant for social animals like us. But, truth be told, meditation is so much more! The practice offers a multitude of physical, mental, and emotional benefits.

In reality, the practice of meditation is all about watching your breath. It is a practice in which a person sits quietly for as long as he or she wants, eyes closed, breathing naturally without controlling the pace and intensity of the breath. All you are required to do is leave the outer world behind for as long as you sit in the pose and focus on your breathing. It's just a simple technique of deep inhalation and exhalation but, if practiced regularly, can bring infinite benefits.

In this fast-paced and competitive world, hardly anyone is living a healthy, happy, and peaceful life. From young children who are tolerating the pressures of a comprehensive curriculum to working professionals who are caught in the quagmire of 9-5 exhausting jobs, everybody has to deal with stress and anxiety. Perhaps, meditation could be the cure, all without spending a single penny.

With that, here, I’m sharing a breakdown of benefits that you may reap from regular practice of meditation:

It refills neurotransmitters

Neurotransmitters are information communicators that affect our mental and physical state. When neurotransmitters are out of balance, there are adverse consequences. There are two types of neurotransmitters: serotonin and norepinephrine. A decrease in these neurotransmitters results in an overwhelming sense of sadness, often leading to depression.

Meditation boosts both serotonin and norepinephrine levels in your brain to a healthy "depression resistant" level, where depression can’t reach.

It reduces the size of the anxiety and depression center in the brain

Amygdala is the brain’s “flight or fightcenter ” and the key stress-responding region of the mind. When we face any negative event, amygdala triggers a bunch of negative elements in our body including depression.

Meditation helps in cooling off the amygdala by shrinking it in size. In simple words, this breathing practice turns off the most critical brain region (i.e. amygdala), which is the depression or fear center.

It teaches you to live in the present

Mediation takes you to a deep state of relaxation where you have no fears and worries, no memories of past and no tensions of the future.

All you feel is the intoxicating silence and that is the stage where your mind experiences itself in its truest, purest, most natural form. When you’re in this state, it makes it easier to live your every moment to its fullest.

Yoga practitioners frequently use meditation to help them achieve this sense of calm and quiet, which then allows them to be in tune with their bodies.

It increases self-awareness

Self-Awareness through meditation

Self-awareness is all about knowing yourself in a better way, including your strengths, flaws, capabilities, fears and your true essence. In simple words, it’s about knowing your body, mind, and spirit. In our busy, hectic, and lengthy schedules, we don’t have time for self-reflection.

To know ourselves in a better way, we need to stop thinking and stop doing for a while and just focus on ourselves in silence. Meditation gives us that silent time to become self-aware by connecting us to our inner self.

It improves emotional stability

Meditation allows you to understand your thoughts and emotions at a very deep level. It helps in developing a balanced state of mind, not too high not too low, and a clear, calm, focused and controlled mind.

It increases happiness

Meditation improves your personality physically, mentally, and spiritually.

When you are transformed into a calm, well-balanced, and peaceful person, you automatically feel happy throughout the day. It changes your attitude towards life and provides you with an optimistic lifestyle.

It helps in gaining clarity & peace of mind

Meditation helps in opening us up to different perspectives. It improves your perception, clears the negative thoughts, and fulfills your mind with love, compassion, positivity, peace and more.

It boosts Your Social Life

Mediation completely changes a person. You no longer remain a dull, lonely, depressed, irritable and troublesome person.

Meditation makes you a person who is full of life, joy, love, politeness, kindness, sharpness, calmness and positive energy. In short, you become the person everyone wants to spend time with.

It reduces anger and releases tensions

Meditation reduces anger

Mediation is an effective tool to reduce anger and release tensions of daily life. When you reach a deep relaxation state, you forget about all your worries and tensions, you become calm, and gradually you feel a sense of joy and peace.

Better mental focus

Various research have shown that meditation helps to increase memory and attention, and improves our power of concentration.

While meditating, one has to focus on inhalation and exhalation and let all other thoughts pass by. This practice of paying attention to one thing only increases the individual’s ability to concentrate and focus.

By bringing tremendous physical and mental benefits into your life, meditation can make your life amazing in a way you’ve probably never imagined. So, to live a happy, healthy, and balanced life, start meditating!
