8 Easy Tips for Staying Healthy while Traveling

Our vacations are almost a sacred thing to us. We dream about them months in advance, longing for that moment when we’ll finally get to rest and let go of worries for a while as we lounge somewhere, drink in hand, mind full of happy indulgence.

But in order to really enjoy ourselves, we need to go through our trip completely carefree and healthy. After all, what’s the point of a vacation if you spend all of it cooped up in your room with a heavy cold weighing down on your sinuses?

Luckily, you can stay as fit as a fiddle if you simply practice some mindfulness and bear a few tips in mind. Interested in what those are? Let us show you.

1. Set reminders for your medication

It’s easy to forget ourselves on vacation, and even though we should definitely let go of worrying and obligations, this doesn’t really apply to the meds we take. See your doctor before your trip to renew any prescriptions and to have a general checkup. You should also ask them for advice if you have any health conditions that need to be carefully managed.

Set reminders on your phone so you could take your medication at the same time every day and try to stick to the same schedule as you did at home. You should also grab a little card and write down all your most important medical data on it. Your health conditions, medications you take and which dosage, any allergies, and the name and number of your primary care physician should be on the card and you should keep it in your wallet.

2. Bring some probiotics with you

Digestion issues are common during travel, and most people with sensitive stomachs would do well to bring a bottle of probiotics and take one pill every day. This will help your digestive tract stay in balance, and you won’t have to spend a chunk of your vacation with an unbearable stomach ache. Of course, you should still be careful and stick mostly to bottled water and avoid any heavy or spicy food if you don’t think you can take it.

3. Get travel insurance

This should go without saying, and yet a lot of people miss out on the chance to get insurance. You never know what might happen, and trust us, you don’t want to end up stuck in another country and unable to pay the medical bills. Once you get insurance you’ll be able to put your mind at ease, knowing you’re safe no matter what happens.

4. Squeeze in a few yoga sessions

If you can, get up early and get some exercising done before your breakfast. Yoga is the perfect choice to do on a trip because it’s very relaxing and it can fill you up with a lot of positive energy that will carry you through the day.

Your body will feel awake and you’ll be more eager to go get things done and make the best of your day.

5. Take a fitness class

If you’re not the kind of person to enjoy exercising alone, then why not go in for a fitness class? A vacation is actually the perfect opportunity to try something new and practice wellness with a group of likeminded enthusiasts.

Besides, these days it’s really easy to book classes and treatments even when you’re in a different country, and you can use apps like MindBeauty in Hong Kong to schedule them. From yoga to spin classes, find something that appeals to you because you really don’t have to sacrifice your workout routine just because you’re away from home.

6. Be mindful of what you eat

It’s so very easy to indulge ourselves when we’re on vacation. And you know what, that’s totally okay. You’re allowed to try new food and enjoy it, and as long as you do it in moderation you’ll be fine. Try to ask for half-portions if you’re eating out because restaurants tend to have huge portions, and do your best to still stick to healthy snacks in between meals – fruits, nuts, and or plain Greek yogurt, for example.

7. Keep your skin hydrated

Your skin needs some love as well! Bring your favorite moisturizer with you, make sure to use sunscreen every day, and keep some face wipes and hydrating mist in your bag for quick refreshment. You don’t need to have a complicated skincare ritual, but simply cleansing and moisturizing regularly will take you a long way and keep your skin fresh and plump.

8. Be sure to get enough sleep

You will, of course, want to party and stay up late, but you should still try to get enough rest. If you have trouble falling asleep in a new place, then try to get a sleeping mask for your eyes and maybe a couple of earplugs. Alternatively, you can use your phone to play you comforting ambient sounds to relax you, or maybe go for a short meditation session right before bed.

Time to relax and finally go on that trip you’ve been dreaming about. As long as you care for your health you’ll have fun and enjoy yourself.
