Each evening, silence will be observed after the evening meditation until after breakfast the following morning. Anyone may choose to have as much alone time as they would like to extend the periods of silence. Most people today have busy lives and spend very little time in silence. Silence is restful, being the mirror of your natural state. Silent community creates a supportive environment in which to deepen understanding, awareness, openness, and compassion. This greatly enhances the benefits of a yoga retreat.
The teaching at this retreat guides a student to be self-referenced through attention to the breath, sensations of the body and whatever arises in every moment. It is a process of letting go, or undoing. You will see yoga as an inquiry: listening, trusting and surrendering to the body. Ultimately it is about being, rather than doing.
In some instances there might be a focus on physically challenging postures and other times it will be more yin - a more subtle approach. It is not just a workout and it is not all very quiet work - it can change depending on the needs of the individuals and the group. There are times when the postures will flow from one to another with the breath and times when a posture might be held for a time - but always with attention to the breath and the sensations throughout the body.
The particular style or the outer appearance of the posture is not of primary importance. The focus is inward listening to the body and breath in each pose. By developing awareness of the breath and sensations in the body, each person adapts and adjusts the pose to suit the needs for their body in each moment, which is always changing. The pose develops from within, not imposed by a concept of how it should be. All students are guided to develop a meditative awareness in the yoga postures that allows them to deepen their self-awareness. This has profound benefits long after you have left the yoga hall.
The teaching is primarily guiding each participant back to their own intuitive knowing. Students come to these retreats for different reasons and with different backgrounds. The retreat experience is unique for everyone, allowing them to have the understanding and experience they need at that particular time.
Of course there is a great deal of variation even within the various styles of yoga. Perhaps as important as the style of yoga is the teachers intention and understanding of how they would like to see a student benefit from yoga retreat. The following short writing about the nature of retreat is a brief expression of our intention for retreat.
The yoga retreats at Rolling Meadows are an opportunity for one to relax and rest in the natural presence/awareness that they are. They feel this is the essence of yoga, meditation and retreat in general. The schedule, teaching, and environment allow one to let go of the demands and details of daily life and to reconnect with and reveal their own deeper knowing. Yoga postures, breath awareness, restorative postures, meditation, silence, and free time in the natural world generally assist in this letting go. As we let go of tension and the busy mind, a deeper knowing that is always present, reveals itself.
There is ample opportunity for people to ask questions during the sessions or in private interviews between sessions. The morning after arrival you will begin what they call social silence, meaning silence between the sessions which ends the last morning of the retreat. The Rolling Meadows Retreats have found this greatly enhances the benefits of the retreat.

Expect to possibly see tapirs, monkeys, peccaries, coatis, macaws, crocodiles, and sea turtles in season. With their incredible root system that grows above water and spreads out as if by walking, the mangrove is a fascinating area to explore. Find yourself in the shade of 80-foot mangrove trees that are host to an amazing array of biodiversity. The mangrove is a vitally important part of the ecosystem because it acts as a filter for reefs, as well as being a bridge where the land meets the ocean, making it home for crabs, birds, lizards, and all types of animals and insects. Dry bags are supplied for your cameras. The paddling is fairly easy and relaxed because your guide will take you up-river with the tide and then turn around to paddle back down again with the tide. The sanctuary is located on the northeast corner of the Golfo Dulce and cannot be reached by any means other than boat. The facility receives mostly juvenile animals that are orphaned by illegal hunting or that have been for some reason abandoned by their mothers. Many of these tiny vulnerable creatures are friendly and can be petted, making this destination one of the most family-friendly activities in the whole region. The tour begins with a boat ride across the Golfo Dulce to reach the sanctuary. After the tour there and on the return trip to the dock in Puerto Jimenez, depending on the time of year you will have the opportunity for dolphin watching and snorkeling.

After 130 million years of existence, the future of these magnificent creatures depends on you.
There are seven species of sea turtles in the world and all of them are considered threatened or endangered due to poaching, predation, habitat disturbance, and degradation and in-water threats. The southern beaches of the Osa Peninsula are visited primarily by two species of nesting turtles: olive ridley and black or pacific green turtles.
Blue Osa has joined forces with the Osa conservation who works to protect these magnificent creatures on two critical nesting sites in the peninsula, the Piro and Pejeperro beaches. The Osa Conservation sea turtle conservation program monitors the nesting activity, predation rates, and hatchling success of these incredible species.
During the morning patrol and sea turtle egg recovery, you will depart at 5:00 am to their beach. Once there you will be recording the tracks that were not recorded the night before. You will also be relocating nests that are in the danger zones which are too close to rivers or high tides and bring the eggs to the hatchery. You will lastly mark the nests by means of the method of triangulation to allow for the release of hatchlings from the hatchery nests.
In the night patrol you will leave at 7:30 p.m. out of the biological station Piro. All patrols will be given an orientation of the activity before departure. Monitoring patrols will be carried out on the Piro beach. As the turtles come out of the ocean to lay their eggs, you will be marking them, taking measurements of the carapace length, species identification by counting scales, and scute. You will also perform a health assessment. You will be awestruck as you watch nature in action.
Pan Dulce beach in Matapalo is one of those rare places where there is a long ride which is great for all skill levels. It is also an ideal place for learners where the surf is gentle making it easy to learn but big enough allowing you to stand and ride. Tours vary according to the tide schedule and must be reserved in advance to ensure availability. This activity is great for all ages. Surf board is included in the price of the lesson.
For an enhanced, adrenaline-packed tour, try the remote zip line and canopy tour. Leave Blue Osa to catch a boat in town and take a beautiful scenic ride across the Gulfo Dulce to Golfito. Once there, you will be transported to the tour. Glide through the canopy at over 30 meters up in the air and have a unique view of the canopys plants and animals. Enjoy the thrill of the ride on the many zip line runs youll take. A little dazzling being up so high. Let the verdant opulence of the Costa Rican rain forest wash over you as you travel from one zip line to another.
After a hike through the jungle, scale the largest original jungle gyms in the forest. You are top roped while climbing an enormous strangler fig roughly 70 feet to a viewing roost. The view at 450 feet over the Golfo Dulce is breath-taking. After exploring the lofty perch and view of the ocean, an exhilarating free fall swing brings you safely back to the Earth. This is an exhilarating and challenging eco-tour, one to set your heart racing.
Performed in the early hours of the morning, from 5:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. in order to avoid high temperatures and activity of predators. You will pass through the station on a path that will take you between 10 to 15 minutes to the nursery. All participants are encouraged to have boots for the condition of the trail and crossing the Rio Piro. Once in the nursery, you will receive an introduction to the project and goals, dynamic activity, and proceed to the release of turtles along the beach, all the babies youll be releasing in the areas where they were collected and spawned by the mother. Babies will be releasing in the upper part of the beach, which help them perform imprinting, a process of recognition of the beach which will help them to return when they are adults.
This well-rounded excursion packs a lot of adventure into one outing. It begins with a horseback ride through pastures and lush rainforest in Cape Matapalo, then makes its way up a hill where you will witness stunning views of the Osa Peninsula. Then comes the experience of a lifetime as you work your way down the face of the waterfall to the exquisite pool approximately 100 feet below. Dont forget to pause while youre up there to (literally) soak it all in! When you finally have to pull yourself away from this idyllic piece of paradise, you will hike back to your waiting horse for the trek back.
