What is Yoga? The word yoga, from the Sanskrit word yuj means to yoke or bind and is often interpreted as “union” or a method of discipline. A male who practices yoga is called a yogi, a female practitioner, a yogini.

What does Hatha mean? The word hatha means willful or forceful. Hatha yoga refers to a set of physical exercises (known as asanas or postures), and sequences of asanas, designed to align your skin, muscles, and bones. The postures are also designed to open the many channels of the body—especially the main channel, the spine—so that energy can flow freely.

This retreat is suitable for new students to yoga as well as those with more experience. The retreat will offer participants the opportunity to sit in silence each morning opening to the new day and to connect with nature and the heart centre. The meditation then flows into a Pranayama (breathing technique). This creates the perfect environment in body for the energy to flow in the Asana (yoga pose) session, which follows. The morning Asana practice will be flowing and dynamic (yang). Energetically we will focus each day on a different chakra (energy wheel), which Asana practice will evolve around.

The evening practice will be more relaxed and restorative (yin) complimented by pranayama (breathing technique), meditation or yoga nidra (active relaxation).

Throughout the week we will focus on balancing our bodies energetically / physically and mentally our daily classes will be enriched by workshops where we will be able to explore in more depth ayurveda – the science sister to yoga, yoga nidra (active relaxation), history and philosophy of Hatha yoga, Unlocking the mystery of ‘OM’ and other yoga related subjects in order to feel relaxed, balanced and revitalised.

Hatha Yoga Flow (morning session): It essentially means movement synchronised with breath and is a vigorous style based on a dynamic flow through sun salutations incorporating yoga asanas (poses)

Restorative/ Yin Yoga (evening session): Restorative yoga is all about healing the mind and body through simple poses often held for as long as 20 minutes, with the help of props such as bolsters, pillows and straps. It is similar to yin yoga, but with less emphasis on flexibility and more on relaxing.

Yin yoga comes from the Taoist tradition and focuses on passive, seated postures that target the connective tissues in the hips, pelvis and lower spine. Poses are held for anywhere between one and 10 minutes. The aim is to increase flexibility and encourage a feeling of release and letting go. It is a wonderful way to learn the basics of meditation and stilling the mind. As such, it is ideal for athletic types who need to release tension in overworked joints, and it is also good for those who need to relax.
