Sacred Mythic Journeys gives you the opportunity to participate in a number of sacred cacao (Mayan chocolate) healing ceremonies, a traditional Mayan fire ceremony, and a series of Mayan calendar workshops with local Mayan elders and 'tatas'. Cacao is a forgotten medicine plant - an ancient teacher and facilitator that assists you in your journey, whatever that may be. Cacao makes focus, connection, and expansion more easily accessible; it also opens the heart chakra.
Special arrangements can be made for a private room, but this is by request only and for an additional charge per night. Please contact Sacred Mythic Journeys for more information. However, in order to maximize the experience for all retreat participants, Sacred Mythic Journeys recommends highly that everybody uses the carefully selected shared accommodations.
Sacred Mythic Journeys always use a selection of reputable and comfortable shared accommodations, as to maintain a family and creative team atmosphere throughout your experience. Individual lodgings and rooms will therefore usually be shared by no more than between two and four people at a time, with shared bathroom and shower facilities.
The Mayans are considered the most culturally advanced among the Mesoamerican civilizations. They also were the first true chocolate aficionados, treasuring cacao as a restorative, mood-enhancing cure-all. It became an integral part of their society, used in ceremonies, given as gifts, and incorporated into their mythologies.
The word “cacao” possibly originated with the pre-Mayan Olmec peoples. The words “ka-ka-wa” were deciphered from an ancient Mayan drinking vessel. This is not to be confused with modern processed “chocolate”, which has been heated, sweetened, and otherwise modified, removing many of cacao’s natural beneficial effects.
The importance of the cacao tree and its fruit to the people of Central and South America is found in their myths and legends. The Mayans inherited their knowledge of cacao from the Olmecs and became the first to use cacao as ‘currency’.
The delicious sacred cocoa elixir is consumed in sacred space and with solemn ceremony, followed by meditation, chanting, breath work, dancing, and with live music. All specially designed to facilitate deep shamanic journeying, bringing insights, answers to questions, connection to your true divine nature, and bliss.
Chocolate plays a part in Mayan traditions. The Mayans’ sacred book, Popul Vuh, contains their story of the creation, and instead of an apple tree, there’s a cacao tree. In this myth, immortal ball-playing twins are beheaded by the gods of death. One has his head hung on a cacao tree. The magical head manages to mate with a woman who becomes the mother of twin gods. These two defeat the gods of death and then end up in the sky as the sun and the moon.

The greatest of these is Tikal, but there are hundreds of other archaeological sites that scientists have not even begun to study. Guatemala City itself is built on the ruins of an impressive Mayan city known as Kaminaljuyu.
