The sense of calmness in the mornings after the pranayam and meditation, the sense of accomplishment after a 2 hour shivananda yoga session, the tranquility of the afternoons with bumble bee hummings, birds chirping, crows crowing and zephyr like breeze cooling the heated body while on with our early evening session. The sense of camaraderie during our evenings out, atop the cliff, the swim in the ocean and the massages. bliss.

Combination of good yoga retreat with possibilities also for beach and leisure life at the cliffs

I particularly liked the mixed programme of yoga and Hari gave a good introduction to practising meditation. Also, Sheba is an excellent cook and the food was always delicious. The grounds are beautiful and quite tropical.

The hassling on the cliff top shacks and restaurants got on your nerves a bit, but everyone is friendly.

My visit to Yogahaus exceeded my expectations. The accommodation was first class and breakfast and lunch was very good. Hari is a great teacher and even though I have been practicing yoga for over 15 years I fully experienced the power of the 'breath' for the first time.

i liked the clear structure of the day with mediation and yoga. and there was still enough time for swimming in the ocean and having nice dinners with the other guests. they provide nice accommodations and delicious food.

the yoga style hari teaches is not about fancy asanas. it’s much more about finding a deep connection between mind and body. i liked this a lot and could relax very good in this week.

    thanks a lot

First time visitor to Kerala I was looking for a yoga retreat to start my month long stay in India. I stayed for 7 days with Hari. Accommodation is very comfortable. Breakfast and lunch included. Here is the news - if you are looking for a quality yoga experience then this is the place for you in Varkala. My own practice improved dramatically over 7 days under Hari' s expert guidance. Just a few minutes walk from North Cliff. I relied on TripAdvisor reviews to choose Sharangati Yogahaus and confidently add mine as a 100% endorsement of the quality of accommodation, teaching and care I received. As Hari says: this is your vacation and it was very special.

What attracted me to Sharanagati was that while it is a yoga retreat it was in Varkala and as a newbie to yoga I could do my own retreat to the beach if needed. However I found that I relished the morning and afternoon yoga/meditation sessions so much that in 12 days I only missed one sessions After about 4 days I noticed a change in my body, it was firmer, and more flexible, and also I felt a change in my mindset again for the positive. The gardens and balconies meant that relaxing in between sessions was a joy. As others have said the food was delicious. I also loved the company of Hari and the fellow travellers at the retreat: the fact that the classes are only for those staying at the yoga house meant that we quickly got to know each other. As a solo traveler it was so good to share meaningful as well as fun times with everyone else in the retreat. We were a mix of abilities and I think no matter what everyone’s experience was everybody seemed to get something from the retreat.

Having done very little yoga or meditation practice before I came to Sharanagati, I now feel confident, and appreciate, the benefits of regular practice. Thank you Hari and to everyone who I met! Such a good experience, highly recommended.

Perfect choice and excellent value for a yoga vacation in Kerala. With five and half hours meditation and yoga practice every day to tone your body, and hone your skills. Plus delicious vegetarian food, a happy staff team and comfortable, super clean accommodation, you can't really go wrong. Five minutes walk away from this secluded and peaceful home-stay along the cliff road you'll enjoy swimming and coastal walks, plus a range of restaurants and shops. Comforted by the routines and rhythm of life here, this place starts to feel like a second home(to me) and as a yoga teacher myself I find Hari's teaching style very relaxed and confident. I fully recommend a visit!

The Sharanagati Yogahaus is an oasis of calm in a generally hectic country! The houses and gardens are beautiful. The guests rooms themselves, clean and comfortable, with mosquito nets and (effective!) ceiling fans.

Hari is an amazing guy. From the welcome hug right through to the goodbye hug, he made us feel relaxed, peaceful and very welcome.

The type of yoga was also exactly what me and my partner were looking for. Very close to the roots of traditional yoga. Hari focused on each person as an individual, encouraging everyone to connect to their bodies, listening to themselves, and adopting asanas etc. accordingly. He even extends this to none of the classes being compulsory (and even feeling that way, rather than it just being said!). We were actively encouraged to take a break when needed and also make sure we're enjoying our holiday.

This was our first time staying at a yoga retreat and we believe we were very lucky to pick the Sharangati Yogahaus. Harri is a wonderful, genuine, unpretentious person and we really enjoyed our time staying with him and practicing yoga. We were there for four days and were amazed at the improvement in our yoga. We quickly slipped into the routine and were so sad when we had to leave. Morning started with breathing and meditation (30 mins of each), followed by 2 hours of yoga. You are then ready for breakfast! We were not really porridge fans before staying at the Yogahaus, but so enjoyed the porridge with mixed fresh fruit and chai. All meals are veggie and the two lovely laddies cooking all the food made beautiful lunches each day. Afternoon yoga practice was 1 hour 30 mins.

Yogahaus is a great place for both experienced and those new to yoga. Harri emphasizes that everyone should do the postures to the best of their ability (its not a competition!) . As previous reviewers have said, the room is spotless clean and functional. We had a double bed with mosquito net and en-suite bathroom. Your room is cleaned and bed linen changed when ever you want, daily if you so wish, you just need to ask. The house and grounds are very peaceful. The Varkala hilltop with its row of countless restaurants is a few minutes walk away and lots of great options for dinner. There are also lots of shops here selling clothes, bags, jewelry, etc. Would highly recommend Harri and the Yogahaus. We have wonderful memories and hope to return.

Location was very good, set off the main cliff top strip. Good access to the restaurants and beaches without feeling you're in a busy surrounding. With 4.5 hours of yoga and meditation classes per day there is more than enough for both yoga enthusiasts and relative new comers (like us). Hari also managed to pitch the yoga at different levels and made the whole experience inclusive which isn't always easy to do. With all that activity you work up an appetite and both the breakfast and lunch provided was very delicious and freshly prepared. One thing to note is that one of the bedrooms in the new building doesn't have a balcony and can be quite dark. Luckily after two days we were able to transfer to a room with a balcony and seating area. We recommend requesting one of the rooms with a balcony in advance. Overall a great, relaxing start to our holiday in South India and we would thoroughly recommend. The group yoga classes and communal meals really helped bring everyone together and we met interesting and nice people.

My mum and I enjoyed a fantastic week with at Sharanagati. There is a minimum stay of three nights which means that you usually bond with your group, helpful for solo travelers. We practiced yoga, meditation and breathing exercises in the morning and yoga again in the afternoon. My mum is a beginner and I have some experience, Hari will make sure everyone is stretched without leaving anyone behind. He has some words of wisdom about everyday life to take away with you - we found this particularly helpful. He also provides a tape of the session so you can practice after you leave. Mealtimes were shared with the group and lunch was always excellent - cooked by the very smiley Sheeba, it was some of the best food we had while staying in Kerala. We also took a walk in the group one morning along the cliff and watched fishermen bring in the nets before having breakfast and pastries in town which was a nice change. The garden is lush and there are several hammocks to while away a few hours. There are two houses to stay in - the traditional and modern house, both are very clean and comfortable. An unforgettable experience, which would be suitable for anyone wanting to practice yoga and have a break from a hectic life. We will be back!.

Can't recommend Sharanagati Yogahaus enough! It was the perfect retreat I was needing after 2 weeks of travelling around India, and the ideal place for a solo traveler to stay. Hari welcomed everyone to his beautiful home and was a fantastic teacher introducing me to Sivananda Yoga, which was something I had not practiced before. After a week here, I felt so relaxed and refreshed, ready to continue the rest of my journey round India. The food was so delicious and I could have sat out in the garden forever. The week flew by and I wish I had the chance to stay longer, as I was keen to continue improving my yoga. I loved meeting everyone who was staying and I can't wait to plan my return! Thank you Hari : ).

I stayed here for 3 nights with three friends and wish that we could have stayed far longer. As soon as we arrived we felt completely welcome. We were immediately served a delicious vegetarian lunch, cooked by Sheba, and got to know the host and yogi Hari.A stay here has many aspects to it. Firstly the accommodation itself is great. The rooms were completely clean and very comfortable, including a spotless bathroom. The breakfast of fresh fruit and delicious porridge is just what you fancy after the yoga and meditation, and the chai is plentiful. We would read books in between the morning class, lunch and the afternoon class in a hammock in the lovely garden. Truly relaxing.Secondly the yoga and meditation instruction was amazing. We were all new to both yoga and meditation but through patient and caring teaching from Hari I was able to get so much out of the sessions. I plan to continue at home at hope that Hari will organize another retreat next time he is in London.Lastly meeting Hari was an experience in itself and was what made the stay. We were able to get to know him over the time we spent together and hear his incredible stories and what he had learnt from them. He is a warm, generous man and full of an unassuming gentle wisdom. The experience made me look differently and more calmly at the busy life I lead and I know his advice will stay with me.Thank you so much Hari, I wish we could have stayed longer..

This was my first yoga retreat, and I savored every moment. Hari is a warm and caring instructor, interested in making sure that you get the most out of the Shivananda practice. I would call it simple but mind-full yoga. Perfect. Hari does the most beautiful chants before and after the practice and I still hear his beautiful voice in my head. Sheba makes a simple breakfast in the morning and a tasty veggie lunch. Wonderful experience; but too short and a bit too hot.

In these reviews I already said all I could think of and more, but I will add that you can trust every positive and complimentary word that has been said. I went to Sharanagati on my own, and I had the most amazing stay there. Hari was so warm and welcoming, down to earth and genuine a yogi as you will ever meet: especially without all the pretence! My friends questioned why I would choose to go to a German yoga teacher while I was in India, and my answer to that is because I trusted my instinct and it was right. Hari is a brilliant teacher, with the perfect balance of discipline, humor, wisdom, and has truly inspired me to practice yoga on a daily basis. If you ask me, hes more Indian than German anyway. Thank you Hari!

I had the most fantastic 2 weeks stay in Sharanagati; over Christmas and New Year. It's a really special place with some of the best features of Ashram, but with far more flexibility. Definitely the best food in Varkala just a 5 minutes walk to the beach. Hari is a great host and teacher, and takes great care to provide the right atmosphere. I was travelling by myself and met lots of great people there. The yoga is pitched at just the right level for each individual. All in all, perfect; I can't recommend it enough.
