Meditation - Mindfulness - Yoga

One way of looking at meditation and yoga is Patanjali's eight limbs of yoga where he describes yoga asana to be one of the first steps and Meditation to be the step before enlightenment (which most of you never reach). As you can see the structure is from gross to subtle: Exterior - Body - Breath - Mind.

  • Yamas - How you behave outwardly toward other beings
  • Niyamas - How you conduct yourself on a more personal level
  • Yoga asana - a posture that can be hold for a period of time, staying relaxed, steady, and comfortable
  • Pranayama - the practice of consciously regulating the breath
  • Pratyahara - the process of retracting the sensory experience from external objects
  • Concentration - one-pointed focus, without drifting of mind, without jumping from one topic to another
  • Meditation - Non-judgmental, non-presumptuous observation of an object
  • Enlightenment

Meditation and mindfulness

Meditation typically refers to formal, seated meditation practice. There are many types of meditation - with a focus on opening the heart, expanding the awareness, calming the mind, experiencing inner peace, and more. Mindfulness is the act of paying attention and noticing and being present in whatever you’re doing. By practicing meditation, you will find it easier to live mindfully.

Yoga asana

There are many types of asanas in many yoga traditions. Everything from very soft asanas to strong hardcore asanas. All of them has been good if they are used for the right purpose. You will start every morning with a yoga asana program with very soft asanas to get the energies flowing in the body. In your busy everyday life, the energies easily get stocked in the joints, neck, and shoulders so you have to open up so the energies start flowing again. You will mainly practice yoga asana from Swami Satyanandas Pawanmuktasana series. These are the perfect asanas both for complete beginners and also for more experienced practitioners.

Pranayama - Breathing techniques

During the retreat, you will learn three different breathing techniques: Nadhi Sodhana, Sitali pranayama, and Bhramari pranayama

Nadhi sodhana - alternative nostril breathing

This is a very relaxed, balancing breath that is used to help calm the nervous system and aid in a restful night’s sleep. By increasing the amount of oxygen taken into the body, this breath can also purify the blood, calm the mind, reduce stress, and promote concentration.

Sitali pranayama

Sitali means cooling, which explains the effect it can have on your mind and body. This breath encourages clearing heat with coolness. It’s especially helpful in hot climates.

Bhramari Pranayama - Bumblebee Breath

This is a calming breath practice that can be performed anywhere. Bhramari is derived from the Sanskrit term for “bee.” Bumblebee breath practice can relieve stress, agitation, and anger. It can also help to calm the body and mind before sleep.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is a state in which the body is completely relaxed, and you become systematically and increasingly aware of the inner world by following the verbal instructions. This state of consciousness is different from meditation, in which concentration on a single focus is required. In Yoga Nidra, you remain in a state of light withdrawal of four senses (pratyahara), and only hearing connects to the instructions given. Yoga Nidra is a powerful technique that helps you reduce stress, improves your sleep and 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra is claimed to give the same effect as two hours of deep sleep. After the retreat, you will be given a recording so you can continue practicing Yoga Nidra at home.

Trataka - Concentration on a candle flame

Trataka is both purification and a concentration method that involves staring at a single point such as a small object, black dot, or candle flame. It is said to bring energy to the third eye. By fixing the gaze the restless mind comes to a halt. It is said that control of the blink reflex stimulates the pineal gland. Trāṭaka enhances the ability to concentrate. It increases the power of memory and brings the mind to a state of awareness, attention, and focus. In the retreat, you will use either the candle flame or a black dot on white paper. The full moon can also be used as the object of concentration.

Meditation techniques

At a retreat at Sten Lodge eco Homestay, you will learn four meditation techniques.

  • Breath meditation
  • Loving kindness meditation
  • Antar Mouna - Inner silence
  • Walking meditation

Breath meditation

Mindful breathing is a very basic yet powerful mindfulness meditation practice. The idea is simply to focus your attention on your breathing - to its natural rhythm and flow and the way it feels on each inhales and exhales. Focusing on the breath is particularly helpful because it serves as an anchor - something you can turn your attention to at any time if you start to feel stressed or carried away by negative emotions. During the retreat, you will learn some Breath meditation techniques inspired by the meditation master Tich Nhat Hanh.

Loving kindness meditation

Loving kindness meditation is a self-care technique that can be used to boost well-being and reduce stress. Regular practice of loving kindness meditation increases your capacity for forgiveness, connection to others, self-acceptance, and more. During loving kindness meditation, you send loving energy toward yourself and others. There are different ways to practice loving kindness meditation, but each variation uses the same core psychological operation. During the meditation, you generate kind intentions toward certain targets including yourself and others.

Antar Mouna - Inner silence

Antar Mouna is a powerful and transformative meditation practice suitable for all levels of experience, including beginners. The name means “inner silence”. It refers to a meditation technique that involves transforming and controlling thought processes through self-awareness and mindfulness. By internalizing the senses through this form of meditation, you observe the inner and underlying structure of the mind and thought processes. Antar Mouna is best practiced sitting on a chair and is, therefore, a perfect practice when you are on the bus or sitting in the shopping center waiting for the rest of the family.

Walking meditation

One of the basic methods for cultivating mindfulness is walking meditation, which involves focusing closely on the physical experience of walking, paying attention to the different components of each step. Walking meditation involves very deliberating thinking about and doing a series of actions that you normally do automatically. Breaking walking down in your mind may feel a little strange in the beginning.
