Ba gua circle walking is the oldest Taoist health and meditation practices. Ba gua refers to the eight trigrams of the I Ching, the ancient Book of Changes. It is a dynamic meditation practice that brings the practitioner to stillness and clear awareness. It’s a highly enjoyable method that delivers high levels of fitness and energy. It is a yogi’s delight, stretching and twisting the body gently and internally while clearing stagnant energy and habitual mental patterns. Ba gua or eight trigrams circle walking is all about change, how to cope with it, how to anticipate it and how to be one with it. Join us on this annual retreat, now in its twelfth year.
Accommodation is in the Manor House at Tourné, a large old stone house with three adjoining meditation halls of different sizes and adapted for different uses. Rooms in the house are available for couples, single occupation or shared with en suite bathrooms.
Ba Gua circle walking is considered as a complete way to understand our experience of life. The practice is about individual experience and how it is interpreted. Applying the wisdom of the Book of Changes (I ching) to our individual experience with circle walking may bring abundant benefits of clarity, increased energy levels and calm in the face of change. This retreat includes the monastic and the martial traditions, a rare combination of meditation techniques and practical applications: stillness is revealed through movement. Ba gua may help to cope seamlessly with the reality of the daily challenges, uncertainty and rapid change. Through circle walking in this method, the nervous system may become smoother so that change becomes less worrying. Taoists use the natural world as their guide. Ba gua circle walking practitioners are said to experience natural energies directly.
During the retreat, participants will be shown all the basics of circle walking, the eight static yogic postures for walking and will be introduced to the single palm change. Dependent on time and experience, all eight palm changes will be explored.
Of all the yogic practices of India and China, Ba Gua Eight Trigrams Circle Walking is considered as among the most efficient as a means to ensure and maintain excellent health and fitness. Combining fast and slow movements, static postures, twisting, extending, crouching, lifting, carrying, turning, dropping, every aspect of the body-mind-emotions complex may be balanced.
Now in its twelfth year, the annual summer Ba Gua retreat at Tourné welcomes beginners. As a means to learn or develop any meditation technique, it combines meditations in the body, on the quality of mind, the source of our response to things and the essence of Tao.
